“Unraveling Life Phenomena through Epigenetics to Shape the Future of Disease Treatment, Prevention, and Healthy Longevity”
The Aoyama Group at the Department of Hygienic Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Keio University, conducts comprehensive research from basic to applied molecular biology, with a central focus on epigenetics—the regulation of gene expression through histone modifications and chromatin structural changes. Epigenetics provides a mechanism to finely tune the ON/OFF states and expression levels of genes without altering the DNA sequence, serving as a critical academic foundation that directly contributes to addressing broad societal challenges, including cancer, aging, metabolic and neurological disorders, as well as the relationship between diet and health.
Placing expertise in epigenetics at its core, our group aims to achieve both scientific advancement and social implementation. By harnessing state-of-the-art technologies such as histone modification profiling, ChIP-seq/RNA-seq, proteomics, and genome editing, we strive to generate new therapeutic strategies, establish preventive medicine, and contribute to extending healthy lifespan, while disseminating this knowledge globally.
